The Fire

Firefighters from multiple departments, led by Jefferson Township Fire Department, responded at ~12:10 p.m. to the Amazon Fulfillment Center at 1550 W. Main St. on a report of a fire on the roof. Approximately 75–100 rooftop solar panels caught fire. Thousands of employees were evacuated as a precaution; workers were later allowed to re-enter in small groups to collect belongings before being sent home. About 10 fire engines responded, with mutual aid from several nearby departments. State Route 29 was closed during the response.

No injuries were reported. Limited structural damage resulted, but significant water damage occurred inside the building from the sprinkler system.

Cause

The fire originated in the solar panel array on the roof. Amazon has experienced six or more solar-related fire incidents at its facilities between 2020 and 2021, making this a recurring concern for the company's renewable energy infrastructure.

This fire is not considered arson and has no reported labor/wage connection. It is included here as part of the April 7–11, 2026 cluster of U.S. warehouse fires that drew national attention.
