Savita Naturals
The Fire
A massive explosion leveled a production building at Savita Naturals, a cocoa-butter extraction facility, shortly after 2:30 p.m. on March 4, 2026. The blast rattled homes, shook windows, and sent debris flying more than half a mile; it was felt across Gloucester County and into the Philadelphia / Delaware County area.
Fire and hazmat crews from multiple South Jersey jurisdictions responded. A shelter-in-place order covering a roughly two-mile radius around Heron Drive and High Hill Road was issued and lifted approximately two hours later. Crews remained on scene for days conducting air-quality monitoring and a controlled burn-off of remaining propane that could not be safely siphoned.
Logan Township Fire Chief Scott Oatman noted that engineered blow-out panels in the building functioned as designed, venting pressure and likely preventing a higher casualty count. Two buildings immediately adjacent to Savita's were deemed unsafe to enter. An adjacent church food pantry sustained ceiling damage. Logan Township Police Chief Joseph Flatley called it "the largest industrial accident that I can recall" in his 25-year tenure.
No fatalities have been reported.
Cause
Under investigation. Officials stated the explosion does not appear to be criminal in nature. Investigators believe the blast "occurred as a result of the processes inside the building" (Philadelphia Inquirer), though that assessment remains preliminary pending ATF analysis.
Savita's cocoa-extraction process used propane recycled in a closed-loop system, producing "dirty propane" that cannot be reused. Approximately five 500-gallon propane tanks on-site were damaged; roughly 500 gallons of liquid propane had to be removed or burned off before investigators could safely enter the debris field. The facility reportedly had no significant OSHA violation history.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is leading the cause investigation in coordination with the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office, Logan Township Fire and Police, OSHA, and the U.S. Department of Labor. No ATF cause determination has been publicly released as of this writing.
Ownership & Operations
Savita Naturals Ltd. is a family-owned specialty-extraction company headquartered at 617 Heron Drive, Swedesboro / Logan Township, NJ. Founder and President Rich (Richard) Trout operates the company; multiple generations of the Trout family work at the facility.
The company's primary business is processing cocoa butter for the chocolate industry. Savita also produced CBD extracts in the past but reportedly halted CBD production in 2023. Extraction operations use propane and ethanol as solvents. Savita has no identified corporate parent — it is an independent, privately held business.
Injuries
At least 11 people were affected across multiple hospitals, though reported counts varied by outlet as the situation evolved:
- Richard Trout (owner/president): severe burns covering 56% of his body and a broken arm; placed in a medically induced coma at Temple University Hospital's burn unit.
- Three additional Savita employees: transported by ambulance in critical condition to regional trauma and burn centers (including Temple and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital).
- One Savita employee: transported by ambulance in stable condition.
- Seven additional Savita employees self-transported to hospitals (conditions not individually reported).
- One employee of a neighboring business: suffered a medical emergency during the response, hospitalized, and subsequently released.
As of March 6, at least three victims remained hospitalized in critical condition. No names beyond Richard Trout's have been published.
Labor Connection
None reported. Documented here because the incident predates and is unrelated to the April 7 Ontario, CA Kimberly-Clark arson but may appear in online roundups of recent industrial fires. Savita Naturals is not a distribution warehouse, is not unionized in any publicly reported way, and the blast has been consistently characterized by officials as a process-industry accident involving stored propane. No outlet, social-media account, or public official surveyed for this file has tied the Savita incident to the wage-protest narrative circulating after April 7. It should not appear in labor-arson lists without that caveat.
